- Are your courses tax-free?
Yes! All of our courses are tax-free and eligible for the provincial tax credit for tuition or examination fees.
- Are you certified by Emploi-Québec and the federal government?
Yes. To obtain our accreditation numbers, please call us at 418-657-2600.
- How long will it take for me to speak the language fluently?
It’s difficult to provide an accurate answer here—each person learns at their own pace. Some start classes as beginners, others have been speaking the language for a long time. We work with each student to set realistic objectives, adapt our approach to his or her needs and provide support each step of the way.
- Do your courses focus only on conversation?
During ACA courses, students typically speak 80% of the time—but we go far beyond discussing what you did last weekend. Conversation (speaking and listening) practice is structured to help you make real progress. You will learn theory, do practical exercises and participate in dynamic communication activities that simulate real-life situations. Depending on your objectives, courses can also focus on other topics like writing or specialized vocabulary.
- Are your instructors native English speakers?
Nearly all of our instructors are native English speakers. They all come from diverse backgrounds and have relevant experience and training. Some of our instructors have been fortunate enough to grow up in a bilingual environment, allowing them to become fluent in both languages.
- Do you offer courses at people’s homes?
Only in rare cases. Our courses almost always take place at our training centre or the offices of our corporate clients.
- What should I bring to my first class?
Please bring a notebook and a pencil. If you have a French-English dictionary, we also recommend you bring it along.
- How many people are in a group class?
Depending on your needs and preferences, you may wish to take small group, private or semi-private courses.
General English group classes have between four and seven students,
Business English group classes have between three and five students.
All online group classes have between two and four students.
- Can I make my own group?
Of course! However, please note that we must ensure students’ language abilities are compatible before proceeding.
- Are your groups based on language levels?
Yes. We evaluate all students before courses start in order to form classes of people with similar language abilities.
- Will my General English group course actually take place? Or do you cancel when there aren’t enough people.
Yes, your course will take place. We teach over 3,000 students a year and are easily able to fill the classes at our training centre.
- When should I sign up?
General English courses: Simply fill in our online form. Please note that private courses can begin whenever you like, while group classes are available at set times. Our group course schedules and rates are available here.
Business English courses: Please contact us to discuss your objectives, needs and availability. If your employer has an agreement in place with ACA, your human resources director may also be able to answer your questions.
- What happens if I miss a class?
Life can throw our schedules a curve ball from time to time, which is why we offer a range of options to make up courses:
General English classes (small groups): ACA offers two make-up classes per session; contact us to find out when they are.
General English classes (private classes): Private classes can be postponed to a time that works for you and your instructor. Please note that we must bill classes cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.
Classes provided through your employer: Please see the terms and conditions provided with your course signup confirmation email or contact us for more information.
Have a question that we didn’t answer here? Please get in touch—we’d be happy to help.
